In 2007 new state law went into effect. Only bona fide zoos, circuses and research facilities may possess cougar, lion, tiger, leopard, cheetah, or jaguar in Louisiana.

Present owners may keep their large cats acquired before August 15, 2006, but must register, meet cage requirements and may not gain new cats. No breeding allowed. Sanctuaries may not acquire new cats. Large cats may not be imported into the state.

Possession of bobcats require a non-game quadruped exhibitor or breeder license.

UPDATE

Louisiana: HB1255 - Will allow owners of illegal animals to surrender them without penalty, provided they surrender them before an investigation.  Signed into law 6/8/2010.
